This evening at 8pm on #FridaySocial on Kennet Radio we will be looking at the #HeforShe campaign that was launched last week by Emma Watson in her role as UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador.
We will joined in the studio by Andrew Shipp, Litigation Lawyer at Gardner Leader, Steph Langley, Senior Lecturer in Social Care at Winchester University and her husband Ian Langley, who is the Secretary of The association of Youth Offending Team Managers, and Lis Allen, speaker and creator of The Vagina Dialogues, which puts the common sense back into mothering.
As well as discussing Emma Watson’s extraordinary speech launching #HeforShe and the reaction it was garnered so far, we will be discussing the eSafety issues affecting women and children on social media following the nude picture threat to Emma (which luckily proved to be a hoax).
We will also look at feminism and the implications of gender inequality on real lives here in the UK, as well as worldwide, and what the #HeforShe campaign might do to help bring about change.
You can listen live here http://kennetradio.com/play/ as well as on the Kennet Radio app, and please feel free to join in on social media using #FridaySocial and we will try and include your comments.
If you haven’t watched the very moving address Emma gave to the UN, do so, she got a standing ovation and it moved me to tears. ‘That Harry Potter girl’ did good!
The UN is calling for the men of the world to support the initiative and take action by pledging their support at www.heforshe.org. If you are a man and you haven’t as yet, hop over and do it now. If you are a woman, share it with the men in your life! This is about everyone supporting everyone….
Since the launch last week Obama, Prince Harry and numerous celebrities, including Harry Styles, and droves of ordinary people have pledged their support:

There have also been the haters, most notable from
in Time magazine, although reading the article suggests she has sadly missed the point of the whole movement, which is to end discrimination against BOTH men and women and bring about gender equality. Since Emma Watson referenced this in her address, it’s perhaps a little surprising Cathy Young draws the conclusions she does. However, just the fact it’s sparking so much debate is a good thing!
